Dreams

So many people ask me if I knew I wanted to be a cosmetologist when I was growing up. That would be a big no. My mom and I always joke that I always was frustrated when I tried to get my hair to do anything and I would say I didn’t get the “hair gene.” When I came to her and my dad and let them know I wanted to go to cosmetology school to say they were a little shocked is an understatement.

I wanted to be a choir teacher. That was my dream. After barely graduating from high school I managed to get a Vocal Music Scholarship to Wallace State and I began my freshman year with 21 credit hours. Talk about CRAZY! I flourished in college in ways I would have never dreamed of in high school. My first semester I was a tenth of a point away from making the deans list! This coming from the girl who literally was ranked 275/276 in her class, but I quickly realized that teaching music was not my path. Music is my outlet and music theory is HARD and I didn’t want music to be complicated. So after finishing my first year at Wallace I decided I wanted to go to cosmetology school. Here is the kicker…I thought I would do hair because I wasn’t smart enough to do anything else. Let me tell you hair is not easy, but the way my school educated made it easier for me to learn! I am a firm believer that if we were taught based on our “learning styles” we would have more successful students.

Don’t get me wrong. While I loved school I was still dealing with a ton of personal issues. I found myself really diving into dating relationships for the first time in my life and I was not choosing very good ones. (We will save those stories for another time.) I was learning how to live on my own, experiencing new freedoms, and dealing with my depression in new ways. Coming from someone who has made plenty of mistakes in her life I think I made the majority of them in that 12 month period of time! I guess you could say I’m an overachiever.

I have been a cosmetologist for 10 years now. I get to be a therapist and be creative all at the same time! And there are days like today where I get to have full creative freedom and see a sweet friend!
